NEW GREENWAY APPROVEDThe Greenville City Council approved a request by the Pitt County Board of County Commissioners to include a new greenway corridor entitled “Charles Boulevard – Signature Drive – Pitt County Recreation Complex Connector.” The proposed greenway corridor will begin at Bells Fork Road and run southeast along Charles Boulevard and southwest along Signature Drive to a point on the Worthington Property approximately 500 feet east of County Home Road, then running south across the Worthington Property to a point on the Pitt County Recreation Complex property. The purpose of the proposed amendment is to provide a greenway corridor from the residential developments located in the southeast quadrant of the City to the Pitt County Recreation Complex property to facilitate a direct connection between the existing greenway system and the trails, paths, and facilities located on the Pitt County Recreation Complex property. The proposed greenway will consist of sidewalks and bike paths located within the right-of-way of public streets and within dedicated greenway easements. The city’s Environmental Advisory Commission recommended approval of this action.

Greenway Awareness And Fun For Earth Day Participants In Greenville
By Lynnette Taylor, WITN-TVEarth Day celebrations in our area kicked off Sunday with a focus on preserving the natural landscape of Eastern Carolina.

Activities for the kids, poster displays by D.H. Conley High School students and displays of the types of trees along the greenway-- is one way the organization hopes to raise awareness of the natural beauty in the area.
This fall the City plans to construct a new three point two mile trail which would connect the Town Common with the Green Springs Park-- creating a more than seven mile long nature trail for all to enjoy.

Celebration of nature continues again today
By Amanda Karr, The Daily ReflectorSeventy-five people turned out Saturday for Greenville's first Astronomy Day, kicking off a weekend of events highlighting nature.
Most participants were families, said Bill All, president of the Carolina Skies Astronomy Club, and parents were as excited as their children to see the wonders of the daytime sky.
"Toward the end of the day, we did get to look at the surface of moon, and that was pretty exciting for a lot of people who've never seen the surface of the moon," he said. Club members set up three telescopes for viewing.
Today, Greenville marks the 37th anniversary of Earth Day.
Friends of The Greenville Greenway will again hold Greenway Fun Day. Events will be centered at Elm Street Gym from 2-4 p.m. and include the group's traditional treasure hunt and a variety of contests and informational displays.
"We hope those who come get some physical exercise and a greater appreciation for the Greenville Greenway and also knowledge of the new greenway that's coming," said Jill Twark, president of the group.
Treasure hunters will seek out mini treasure chests that can be redeemed for prizes. There will also be three-legged races, tug-of-war and an egg-and-spoon race.
Starting at 4 p.m. a concert titled "Reverence for Life, An Earth Day Celebration," is being presented in memory of Albert Schweitzer.
Schweitzer won the 1952 Nobel Peace Prize for his philosophy of "reverence for life."
Local musicians will perform a variety of music during the free concert from 4-6 p.m.
